Treasures in the Rough

Singapore

Jan 2020, Cavan Road

In this interactive living exhibition, we experimented with live mediums to contextualize how regional culture preserve and evolve under the backdrop of global trends and movements. Treasures in the Rough is a reference to both the budding desire of local Southeast Asian art wanting a bigger stage in the world, and the breakout trend of female artists garnering attention globally. The female surrealists in the exhibition, for example, Genesis’s breakfast in bed and Anna’s dinner, are undercurrent references of angst and desire to break through the surface of joyous consumerism. We want to bring local and foreign artists together to discuss this anxiety shared both regionally and locally, and mark the movement of empowerment.
