The Imperial Arts of Modern Asia

New York

May 2019, Chelsea

In this boundary-clashing exhibition, we brought out modern art pieces crafted from ancient artisanal techniques. Set against the backdrop of western mastery of Graff jewelry, we are inviting the audience to challenge the European craftsmanship hegemony, and question the frequent voice of traditional arts and crafts forms cannot be made cool and contemporary.

The pinnacle of the exhibition is a special objet d'art commissioned by Recharge Foundation. The Butterfly's Dream vase, made by feather marquetry artist Shenglin Wang, symbolizes how modern aesthetics and traditional techniques are merged and transformed to reflect the evolution of Chinese art culture narration.
